Ever heard of Cancun? For those who haven't, it is a fascinating Mexican city in the southeastern part of the country in the state of Quintana Roo. In order to convey the exact sound of its name, the city was often spelt as 'Cancoon' in the earlier English-language documents. It seems to be divided into two parts - one with white-sand beaches, glamorous hotels, seafood restaurants, and a happening party scene; and the other an actual city with local flavours and undeveloped beaches. No matter which part of the city you are in, there's always something or the other to do while holidaying in this part of the world. Let's now discover more of Cancun:

A charming coast

The coast of Cancun has miles of white, powdery sands favoured by many tourists coming from distant places to unwind on some charming beaches. Most of the resorts located along the coast offer their own beach areas for guests. They can relax on loungers, sipping a glass of margarita or basking in the warm rays of the sun. Among the largest beaches is Playa Delfines, which is popular among folks seeking some adventurous activities in the blue waters surrounding it. This beach is open to the public, allowing both tourists as well as locals to savour everything that it has to offer. Other famous beaches are North Beach, Playa Forum, and Playa Tortugas.

An intriguing history

It is evident from the earliest records of the colonial period that the city was known among the Mayan people as 'Nizuc'. The Mayans built a few important monuments in this region, which have become popular tourist attractions in recent times. One of them is the El Castillo, a wonderful stone structure that's not to be missed while touring Cancun. It is easily accessible from the city and is now the second most visited place in the whole of Mexico. The monument is located in the ancient city called 'Chichen Itza'. It is a 24-metre-tall pyramid and one of the finest examples of Mayan architecture.

A unique wildlife

You'll come across a variety of wild animals and birds while getting around in Cancun and its surroundings. Among the mammals that would catch your attention are spider monkeys, white-tailed deer, and the Yucatan black howler monkeys. The American crocodiles, green sea turtles, and spiny-tailed iguanas are some of the reptiles found in the biosphere reserves of this region. Bird lovers would be charmed by the Yucatan parrots. They are mid-sized with a red ring around their eyes and a small yellow patch behind their bills. A popular spot to witness the amazing wildlife of the region is the Urbano Kabah Park, also called Kabah Ecological Park.

A range of adventurous activities

A range of adventurous activities can be enjoyed in Cancun during your time spent in this Mexican city. You can get to Isla Mujeres, an island at a distance of about 13 kilometres from the mainland. Upon reaching the island, you can enjoy surfing and diving in its turquoise waters. Over the years, it has become a popular destination for day trips among tourists visiting Cancun. A yacht charter in Cancun would allow you to enjoy some memorable experiences. The luxury yachts provided by the local companies would take you on an unforgettable journey around some fantastic beaches and gorgeous islands.
