Enjoy the sun, sand, and sea

There are many beautiful beaches on this Greek island, which makes it one of the tourist hotspots during the summer season. You'll get the opportunity to unwind on vast stretches of sands while exploring these beaches during your all inclusive crete holidays. Touched by the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean, they also help you relax while feeling the warm rays of the sun. One of the most exotic beaches you'll find in this part of Greece is Balos. It is located about 60 kilometres north-west of the Chania town. You can take an excursion boat from the beach to the nearby rocky island called Gramvoussa. Some of the other beaches you can visit are Elafonissi and Falassarna.

Explore the lush green countryside

You'll have a wonderful time visiting the majestic countryside of Crete. Most of the villages are truly picturesque with olive groves, vineyards, and vast green fields. The villages on this island have ancient roots and their inhabitants have preserved their rich culture and customs even today. If you visit during special occasions, such as on any of the festivals or a wedding celebration, you'll get to see some of the traditional dances and musical performances. At other times, you'll see the regular folks meeting up in coffee houses or 'kafenias' and sharing their local gossip.

Discover an intriguing history

Human settlement in Crete dates back to the prehistoric times. The first humans settled on the island about 130,000 years ago. By 7th millennium BC, they had begun using cattle, sheep, goats, and dogs for domestic purposes. Cereals and legumes were used as food. During the 2nd and 1st millennium BC, the island was inhabited by the first advanced civilisation of the European region, the Minoan. This was overrun by the Mycenaean civilisation, followed by the Romans, Byzantine, Arabs, Venetians, and the Ottomans. While getting around on the island, you'll come across many ancient sites, such as the Palace of Knossos and the old town of Rethymnon.

Savour the delectable treats

Cretan cuisine uses fresh ingredients along with plenty of greens, wild herbs, and olive oil. You can relish the Kalitsounia and Sarikopitakia pies, which differ in their preparation but use generous quantities of cheese. Grilled octopus is yet another mouth-watering delight you can try while holidaying on this island. Snails fried with flour using olive oil and the addition of wine to the preparation is also worth tasting. Don't miss the Cretan Salad, which is made using egg, potato, tomatoes, and zucchini.
